World Wide Naked Gardening Day Pics

Ready to get some dirt under your fingernails and perhaps in some other areas as well?

Then Saturday is the day for you as it's World Naked Gardening Day, when people across the globe are encouraged to don their birthday suits and join in the tradition enthusiasts call a fun, simple joy that encourages body acceptance and lets people "be honest with who we are as humans and as part of this planet."

According to WNGD.com, the annual first Saturday in May celebration promoted by The Naturist Society, is a family-friendly, non-political event that anyone can participate in, alone or in groups, inside or outside where the sun can kiss your assets. Extra sunscreen recommended.

"An elderly lady in a Manhattan apartment can plant new annuals in her window box. Families can rake leaves in their back yard. Freehikers can pull invasive weeds along their favorite stretch of trail. More daring groups can make rapid clothes-free sorties into public parks to do community-friendly stealth cleanups," says the group on its website.

The international event, which was inspired by the World Naked Bike Ride, (mark your calendars, this year's ride is on June 13) began in 2005.

"We figured that if people tried gardening naked once, they would smile," said Mark Storey, co-creator of the day in an interview with the Today Show.

Story, who is an editor for The Naturist Society's magazine "Nude & Natural," said it feels good to garden with no clothes on and that if people try it "they'd see that nudity is actually a pleasant and inherently good thing." Further, he said, "it doesn't matter what kind of body shape you have or how old you are."

Dig it?

Organizers say that the first thing you need to do is lose the linens, denim, cottons or whatever and grab your trowel and get to work making "your part of the botanical world a healthier and more attractive place."

(Hats, shoes and gardening gloves are optional.)

Second, the group encourages participants to tell someone about the experience.

"Tell your friends about your day of naked gardening; write down what you thought of it and email it to your local newspaper; post your thoughts and images onto an Internet site; submit stories and photos to your club newsletter[!]"

Many past participants have enthusiastically taken those words to heart as evidenced by the many photos posted online. Below are some of the not X-rated ones.

Happy World Naked Gardening Day everyone. Go out there and get your Adam and Eve on.

And as you are happily sowing the seeds of au naturel acceptance, remember the words of the late, great Walt Whitman who wrote in his 1882 book "Specimen Days and Collect," "Sweet, sane, still Nakedness in Nature! --ah if poor, sick, prurient humanity in cities might really know you once more!"

Happy horticulture!
